Words according to Andrew Jeffries, an artist and musician from Mentor, Ohio.

As I develop our art gallery, Stella's Art Gallery in Lake County Ohio, I thought it would be a good idea for the viewers to get to know some of our local artists. I asked our team if they would be willing to share their thoughts. One fine gentleman said ABSOLUTELY...

So here he is...I gladly introduce Andrew Jeffries, a block print artist.

An artist's perspective: Right now making art is all about looking for images that add to
a person's daily experience. And the images we surround ourselves with have a way of helping
to provide a central reference point for our lives, don't they? For example, the good people of Fairport Harbor have made the lighthouses a part of their identity. And there are other buildings
in this area that are very prominent features of our cities. Buildings are sentinels in a city.
They function to provide places of work, worship and entertainment. And just like a favorite wrench in a toolbox or a favorite utensil in a kitchen, they are given identities because we rely on them often.

A series about Lake County buildings seemed to make sense because it shows the world who we are and is a good reminder for us, too.

Bowl on HOLD but Check OUT these GLASSES!!!!!

My bowl is most likely sitting on a shelf waiting to be fired. The studio is closed for the next couple of weeks therefore I'm going to wait patiently to glaze it...still taking suggestions by the way!

In the mean time, check out these glasses my mom CAROL has painted. Beautiful 16 oz stemless glasses! I love them!

She started by making basic free flowing lines for the branches of the cherry blossom trees.
We placed a white cloth inside the glass so you can see the designs.
t
Then, she began dotting or stamping her brush on the glass to make the flowers.
Here's a second picture of the blossoms close up with added detail. The picture is a bit dark but you get the idea!
She finished it off by painting around the base of the glass. This finishes the piece so nicely.  Simple, yet so beautiful! These are for sale on our website. www.StellasArtGallery.com

BOWL take 2!

On Monday I went back to the studio and trimmed up the bowl I shared last week. Here are more pictures! Still taking color suggestions. SO far the leading suggestion is BLUE. I had a little friend suggest blue and white swirls going counter clockwise. I kinda like that idea! Kids are sooo creative...gotta love 'em! So, tell me, what's your suggestion? Do you agree with Josie or have a totally different idea? There's still time!!!!!

New Year New Goals!

So in addition to blogging more,  I set a few New Year goals for myself with my art. I would like to make and finish 5 ceramic pieces and one painting a month. This may not seem like much but I decided to set small goals that I know I can can accomplish with a family. If I complete more, great! Something that I know about myself is that if I don't set manageable goals, I'll give up before I even start.

This week I went back to the studio and got back on the potter's wheel. It has been a LONG time since I did anything on the wheel. I was in a rut and began hand building, got tired of hand building and went back to the wheel. ANYWAYS...I was nervous that I wouldn't be successful and get frustrated but that wasn't the case! It was like riding a bike and I had a great day with clay. Here's a picture of one of my pieces. You are seeing it in it's rough form...wet clay. Next week I will trim it up and have it fired. Then I'll glaze it and fire it again. When I am done, I'll post a second picture. Until then, what color do you think I should glaze it? Let me know your thoughts!

Happy New Year!
Dani
